A carefully planned & executed maneuver (similar to the one on the night we met - but that is another story) was carried out with precise timing that caught Alison totally by surprise. I smuggled the ring in to the hotel that afternoon, and Chris (my South African mate who is the manager in the sports bar downstairs ) kept the digital camera.
We had a lovely meal in the Italian Restaurant, and during dessert I asked
Alison to look behind her at a couple we knew. When she did this, I dived
on one knee, popped open the box, along with the question which I sang
in my best Italian operatic voice " Ali, will you marry me - DA -
DA - DA - DA - DA - DA, Ali, will you marry me la - DA - DA - DA - dee
- dee." As the restaurant did quieten down, my confidence increased
and the third & fourth verses got louder. After a few tears (not sure
if it was happiness or embarrassment ) she said 'yes,' the restaurant
applauded, and we were officially engaged. ( Didn't even get a bottle
of Champagne or a discount from the hotel ! ) |
